Lilith must have read the desperation on his face, for her features softened sympathetically. Or was it pity?
âWe must all wait until fate deems us ready, or spits us out,â Lilith murmured half-heartedly. Her dark eyes unfocused to a distant place in a way Thane knew too well. As a goddess of shadow, she held a fondness for him that could be seen as a weakness. But her strength was darkness, emptiness, a place where none could touch her. Even so, she cared for him. She wished for a future where he would become her champion and take his place at her side as a god.
Until then, she belonged to another.
âMy husband calls me,â she said, though Thane already knew. She turned from him, her frame billowing with smoke as she left her compassion behind and embraced the void. The slick, dark Aethyre that gave her life licked her midnight robes that fanned behind her.
âOf course, my goddess.â
She vanished, only tufts of smoke licking where she'd once stood. Her sudden absence left Thane weak and unbalanced, like a wall he'd been leaning on was no longer there.
He'd been so hopeful that Lilith would know what to do. But she had nothing to give, not while he was still human. And while she was a mistress of secrets, even she did not know Cynthia's. That unnerved him most of all.
Thane passed through the portal to return to Alterine, his shoulders relaxing as he left the oppressive heartbeat of Amoura. Jakob stirred as his feet touched solid marble tiles once again. What now? he asked.
A dull pain throbbed in the center of his chest, reminding him that Jakob's duty still remained. âWe'll find a bloodline to harvest tomorrow,â he whispered to the silent halls.
It wasn't a mission to find his soulmate, nor the answer to their problems, but the news eased the urge crawling up his neck. Jakob was bound to serve Amoura, and finding a bloodline was the only way he knew how.
As Jakob went back into silence, leaving Thane to make his way to his chambers, his thoughts drifted to Cynthia. It made no sense. Where could she possibly get so much Aethyre? Why wouldn't even Lilith know about it? More so, why didn't she seem to care? Something was terribly wrong.
Thane's eyelids felt heavy, but his need for answers wasn't going to let him sleep.
He spun on his heel and went for the one place he knew where he wouldn't be welcome, not even as a Seer. If he couldn't find what he was looking for from Lilith in a pocket realm, he needed to go to the one place where he could find answers. Amoura.
Where are you going? Jakob's voice trilled in the back of his head. Even as Jakob's concern washed over him, he made no attempt to reclaim the body and turn them back towards the promise of a warm bed.
If Thane responded, he might have questioned the decision himself. So he sped his gait, hurrying in silence to the edge of the estates.
